In the last decade, this therapy has multiple drug approvals for market entry in oncology, with a growing and hopeful clinical application and with 3 researchers, awarded with the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their work in this area. In parallel and in association with this growth, immunotherapy has been progressively studied and applied to other diseases, such as autoimmune diseases - which currently affect about 4% of the world population (The National Stem Cell Foundation).<\/p><p>Given this scenario of high social, economic and scientific impact, the BASI Innov.Bio.Tech program arises to enhance strategic partnerships between BASI and innovative startups from around the world, which are developing new innovative medicines in these key areas for the lives of so many patients. Through Beta-i's technical management, the program began with the process of global solution research from the consultancy's database and custom research. Beta-i is currently selecting about 15 projects for exploratory and alignment talks with BASI, to be held later in March, in order to select up to 5 startups for the Collaboration Design Print that takes place at the end of the month. From this stage of the process will emerge the 2 partner startups for joint development of solutions, to be presented next August.<\/p><p>The pharmaceutical company BASI is a company of the FHC Group, one of the most important business groups in the pharmaceutical sector in Portugal, with multinational activity and over 600 employees in companies located in Portugal, Spain and several African countries. BASI, based in Mort\u00e1gua, is responsible for the research, development and production of over 200 drugs in the group's portfolio. The company has more than 270 employees and has a global presence and activities in more than 60 countries on 4 continents.<\/p><p>According to Catarina Cardoso, Director of Research, Development and Innovation (R&DI) at BASI: \"BASI and the FHC Group have continuously assumed R&D activities as a strategic area of the group, with innovation being an important pillar of its activity. One that has allowed the creation of a robust portfolio of drugs for essential medical needs. Recently, we have concluded that we are in a position to actively participate and invest in the therapeutic areas with the greatest impact on people's quality of life, such as oncology and immunotherapy. With this program, coupled with Beta-i, we are focusing on these two key areas, striving to find projects that can bring hope to cancer patients and those with autoimmune diseases. We believe that various opportunities for the next generation of healthcare can be accelerated and achieved through close relationships with other companies, innovative research groups with disruptive ideas, R&D centers and universities.<\/p><p>BASI chose Beta-i for the development of the program because it believes this innovation consultancy shares this same vision. \"The Pharma & Healthcare universe is one of our main areas of expertise. This is one of the industries where we have been working continuously with companies and institutions inside and outside Portugal, which allows us to have the technical capacity to manage such an open and collaborative innovation program, with an international network of reference startups for the development of pilot projects together with BASI,\" highlights Beta-i's Co-Founder and Global CEO, Pedro Rocha Vieira.<\/p><p>Recently, the partnership between BASI and Targtex was announced. Targetex is a startup developing a novel local therapy for the treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM), the most aggressive type of brain tumor and currently without effective therapeutic options available in the market.
